Speaker B:It is a great event.
Speaker B:The venue I was just talking and you'll see in our interviews today, I was talking to somebody about the venue there in Pittsburgh is just fantastic.

Speaker B:It's an excellent event.
Speaker B:Even if you're not going for like points or anything.
Speaker B:You guys know that national world events are open to everybody.

Speaker B:Let me know in the comments who you would like to see at Fall Nationals.
Speaker B:Now we've got a couple of different things for you today.
Speaker B:Speaking of Fall Nationals, let's get started with this.
Speaker B:We had a contest.
Speaker B:ATA headquarters put on a contest during the run up to World Championships where they took all of people who registered online at HA Easy signup and put those names in a drawing to win free participation at Fall Nationals.
Speaker B:And we're going to be highlighting one of those winners today.
Speaker B:I got her on the phone to do a quick interview.
Speaker B:Let's go to that.
Speaker A:Nation.
Speaker B:I have a special guest with me today.
Speaker B:Hey ma', am, can you introduce yourself?
Speaker C:Hi, Maddie Dexter.
Speaker C:And you are from Atmore, which is in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania.
Speaker B:And I forgot to ask you, what's your, what's your belt rank?
Speaker C:Secondary Black belt.
Speaker B:Very cool.
Speaker B:Awesome.
Speaker B:Well, we've got you on the show today because you were one of the winners of the contest that ATA had.
Speaker B:And I don't know if everybody remembers, but ATA took all the people's that registered online for the Super 20 and like, randomly drew from there two winners to be able to get free entry into the national event in Pittsburgh.
Speaker B:And so you were one of the winners.
Speaker B:Can't.
Speaker B:Can't feel too bad.
Speaker B:Like, you were probably going to Super 20 anyways, right?
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:So you just.
Speaker B:You just get a free tournament from that.
Speaker B:I. I mean, I wouldn't complain about it.
Speaker B:Probably not a bad game.
Speaker C:No.
Speaker B:And you're in Pennsylvania anyways, so were you guys planning on going to Pittsburgh?
Speaker C:Yes.
Speaker B:Have you.
Speaker B:You said Super 20.
Speaker B:Speaking of, I didn't ask you.
Speaker B:How did Super 20 go for you this year?
Speaker C:It went really well.
Speaker C:I got first in combat and taken into ar.
Speaker B:Oh, yeah.
Speaker B:That's a good way to start the year.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:You can't.
Speaker B:You can't.
Speaker B:You know, it never feels bad when you open up those tournament standings, like, after they just load worlds and you're like, boom, I've got a billion points already after one tournament.
Speaker C:Yeah, it's really nice.
Speaker B:Is combat your go to combat and sparring?
Speaker B:Your go to stuff?
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Not a.
Speaker B:Are you a weapons person?
Speaker C:Not at all, but I was.
Speaker C:I did extreme forms and that was mine, and then I switched it.
Speaker B:Okay, cool.
Speaker B:Cool.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Excellent.
Speaker B:So what are you planning on competing in at Pittsburgh?
Speaker C:Just sparring.
Speaker C:Combat.
Speaker B:Sparring and combat.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:You gotta keep your place at the very top of the list there.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Going for the TOC this next year then, right?
Speaker B:You said second degree, so you're in the second third degree division.
Speaker B:What age group?
Speaker C:13.
Speaker C:14.
Speaker B:13 14.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Is this your second year in that group or first year?
Speaker C:Yeah, my second year.
Speaker B:Second year.
Speaker B:So you're like, this is the time.
Speaker B:This is the nice side.
Speaker B:You're like, I'm at the high end of the age group, so I can, you know, jump on everybody and have a good time.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Did I assume you've been to fall nationals before?
Speaker B:Since you're close?
Speaker C:Yes.
Speaker B:What do you.
Speaker B:What do you think about this being the last fall nationals in Pittsburgh?
Speaker B:Pittsburgh.
Speaker C:I'm very sad.
Speaker C:I like to hear.
Speaker C:I think it was really good for everyone.
Speaker C:I think everybody said they liked it.
Speaker C:The Convention center is really nice.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker B:I tell people all the time, I love the Convention Center.
Speaker B:It's the only convention center we've been to that there's sunlight.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Every other time we're like in a Basement somewhere.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:So I will miss it.
Speaker B:I agree.
Speaker B:Pittsburgh is fantastic.
Speaker B:I'll be out there for the last one of the year.
Speaker B:You're going to be there.
Speaker B:Would you.
Speaker B:As it being the last one of the year, you know, you.
Speaker B:You get to go, you know, free.
Speaker B:Enjoy your time there.
Speaker B:But what would you tell somebody else who's, like, thinking about, you know, I've never been to Pittsburgh for the nationals.
Speaker B:Maybe I should go, Maybe I wouldn't.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:What would you tell them about going?
Speaker C:Pittsburgh is, like, a really good city to see.
Speaker C:There's a lot to do, and I think overall, the convention center is one of the nicest I've been to.
Speaker C:And I think it's really run, like, the tournaments really run well, and it goes pretty fast.
Speaker B:It does, yeah.
Speaker B:I totally agree with you.
Speaker B:I think it's a great one.
Speaker B:Did.
Speaker B:Is there something in Pittsburgh, like, is there a restaurant or a thing in Pittsburgh that you enjoy going to when you're there?
Speaker B:Is there a place that you're like, I got to get their pizza or I got to get their ice cream or something?
Speaker C:We go.
Speaker C:Like, my family kind of goes all over Pittsburgh.
Speaker C:There's, like, a really good soup dumpling place there.
Speaker C:I like that.
Speaker C:The melting pot's really good.
Speaker B:Yep, I've heard of that one.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Good, good, good.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Well, as a Pennsylvania native, you know the.
Speaker B:The spots to go, so maybe we'll have ATN Nation.
Speaker B:Just be like, follow her.
Speaker B:Go wherever she's going to go to eat.
Speaker C:Yeah, my dad probably get spots.
Speaker B:He knows all the good spots.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:Okay, so ATA Nation, if you need to know the good spots, you guys just find the Dexter family and be like, hey, where should I go?
Speaker B:Are you.
Speaker B:You doing any training or anything out there?
Speaker B:Just going up for the.
Speaker B:The tournament.
Speaker C:Yeah, I think I'm just gonna go for the tournament this time, because I'm not.
Speaker C:We can't.
Speaker C:I can't miss a lot of school this year either.
Speaker C:So that's why I'm not competing on Friday, too.
Speaker B:Gotcha.
Speaker B:That makes sense.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:What grade are you in?
Speaker C:8Th grade.
Speaker B:It's getting tough.
Speaker B:And you start tomorrow.
Speaker B:You start tomorrow, right?
Speaker C:Yes.
Speaker B:Okay, so I'm gonna wrap this interview up because I don't want to have you have to be talking to me all day on your last day before school starts.
Speaker B:You got to go enjoy your freedom and have a great time.
Speaker B:So congratulations on winning.
Speaker B:This is a.
Speaker B:An easy contest to enter.
Speaker B:If you just, you know, register online for the tournament, you could be entered into it.
Speaker B:I think I'm not sure at Nation.
Speaker B:Don't.
Speaker B:Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, but I think ATA might be doing something similar for nationals.
Speaker B:So make sure you get out there, register for the tournament in Pittsburgh and we'll see.
Speaker B:Maybe they'll do another drawing.
Speaker B:So, hey, thanks Matty for your time today and I look forward to seeing you in Pittsburgh.
Speaker C:I'll see you at Pittsburgh.
Speaker C:Thank you.
Speaker B:Well, how cool to win from signing up online.
Speaker B:Make sure you guys go over and register online at ATA Easy signup.
Speaker B:You know what, I forgot to check when we have only 43 days, 19 hours, 50 minutes and 21 seconds until all national starts.
Speaker B:So make sure you get registered and I think the prices are going to go up.
Speaker B:Let's see.
Speaker B:You know what, I hadn't looked when the prices are going up, but are you registered yet?
Speaker B:Let me know in the comments if you are registered.
Speaker B:If you're not, you need to be.
Speaker B:I have registered for my trainings there.
Speaker B:I'm pretty excited about that.
Speaker B:Lots of awesomeness coming from that.
Speaker B:It is still looks like there's still some discount pricing, so you guys are good for a little while.
Speaker B:Don't miss out.
Speaker B:Get registered.
Speaker B:Now, as we continue to feature here on the podcast, we have our athlete of the week coming up.
Speaker B:But I want to mention to you out there who are licensees, if you're watching or listening to the podcast and you are an ATA licensee, don't miss the the business beyond the Mat show that we do on the licensee Facebook page and on YouTube on Tuesdays, every other Tuesday usually.
Speaker B:Our next one is, is tomorrow the 25th and we've got senior master Bentley on the show talking about, you know, how he's running his school, what he's done, successful in a like a smaller community, those kind of things.
Speaker B:So that show will be tomorrow.
Speaker B:Don't miss out on that.
Speaker B:If you are an ATA licensee, that's a show specifically for licensees.
Speaker B:If you're not a licensee and you want to open a school, make sure you reach out to headquarters.
Speaker B:You know, some great deals on schools and clubs.
Speaker B:It's a, an awesome career, don't you know, like I'm loving it.
Speaker B:20, 30 Years almost.
Speaker B:So now let's get to our athlete of the week, ATA Nation.
Speaker B:We have another awesome athlete of the week with us today.
Speaker B:Hey sir, can you introduce yourself for us?
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker A:Hi, my name is Chris Grover and I'm a third degree black belt from Cary, North Carolina.
Speaker B:Oh, Cary, North Carolina.
Speaker B:So you are with Vision Martial arts, right?
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Do you know Senior Master Beto?
Speaker A:Your master, but is my instructor, sir.
Speaker B:Oh, I grew up with Senior Master Beto.
Speaker A:Really?
Speaker B:Yeah, I did.
Speaker B:You totally.
Speaker B:So tell him when you see him.
Speaker B:This week you were talking to Senior Master Hayden and.
Speaker B:Yeah, I have stories of Senior Master Beto when he was a, you know, a kid here in Northeast Indiana.
Speaker B:We, I, you know, his mom is a master here in the local area.
Speaker B:We're good friends.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:So I have known Senior Master Beto and Chief Master.
Speaker B:She just got Chief Master, I believe, right?
Speaker B:Chief Master Wegman.
Speaker B:Yeah, since they were, since they were little, I was.
Speaker B:This is a funny, a funny side story.
Speaker B:I remember being at an all nighter we did at one of the schools in Fort Wayne, staying up all night, and Chief Master Wegman was one of the like chaperone people there.
Speaker B:And I was staying up and I got some, I got some stories.
Speaker B:But we'll, we'll talk about you now instead.
Speaker B:Now one of the things that people saw on the Ambassador corner was that you have this really cool uniform that you take around.
Speaker B:Tell everybody about, about that.
Speaker A:So it's a project I started last year at Worlds.
Speaker A:It originated from like, I collected signatures on a combat stick since I really like to compete in combat.
Speaker A:But after using the stick a lot and then also the limited space, the signatures would sort of fade.
Speaker A:So I had my old heavyweight uniform and I sort of just went around, started asking masters, got some pieces, pieces of advice for like combat and sparring as I would talk with them and get their signatures.
Speaker B:That's awesome.
Speaker B:I, I got to see it at Worlds.
Speaker B:I actually got to sign it this year at World Championships.
Speaker B:And man, that thing is, it's almost a black uniform now instead of white uniform.
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker B:How do you have a guess on how many signatures are on it?
Speaker A:I think I got 80 from this world and then I don't know how many from last year.
Speaker A:So I think maybe 200.
Speaker B:Yeah, I was gonna say it's gotta be 100.
Speaker B:That, that's awesome.
Speaker B:If you, if you guys haven't seen it, you can check it out on the Ambassador Corner episode that came out on Instagram.
Speaker B:It's on YouTube then too, on YouTube shorts.
Speaker B:So check that out.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:So how did you get started in martial arts?
Speaker A:This is also a really funny story.
Speaker A:So before I did martial arts, I used to do dance.
Speaker A:I did Bollywood dancing for four to five years and I was at a dance festival.
Speaker A:I was just done performing and as I was leaving, there was a Vision booth over there with Ms. Patel.
Speaker A:I think she was one of the former ambassadors too.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker A:So she was there, and she had, like, a spin wheel, and it had a lot of colors, and I just wanted to spin the wheel.
Speaker A:And I won, like, six weeks or six months of free classes.
Speaker B:Nice.
Speaker B:Did you.
Speaker B:Okay, so you guys started after a dance.
Speaker B:Did you continue doing the dance as well?
Speaker B:Or did you be like, hey, now I can kick people.
Speaker B:I'm going to this.
Speaker A:So I did dance for a couple more years after that, and then I sort of just fully shifted into Taco, you know?
Speaker B:That's so funny.
Speaker B:People don't believe me when I tell them, but I was similar.
Speaker B:I didn't do Bollywood dancing, but when I was little, my mom signed me and my brother up for, like, tap dance.
Speaker B:I don't know why I never expressed any interest in it, but went for years and years and then found martial arts.
Speaker B:Did a little more dance still.
Speaker B:Because I. I was at the point where I was like, okay, I did.
Speaker B:I didn't really love it.
Speaker B:I never really loved my dance.
Speaker B:I was just.
Speaker B:Was like.
Speaker B:My mom drove me, and so we had to do it, and if you didn't get out of the car, she beat us or something.
Speaker B:I don't know.
Speaker B:So we went to dance anyways, but then I found martial arts, and I was like, oh, no, this is what I really want to do.
Speaker B:Did a little more dance after.
Speaker B:But that's super cool.
Speaker B:You're not the only one.
Speaker B:You know what I think?
Speaker B:Who was it?
Speaker B:Chief Master.
Speaker B:Chief Master Sanders.
Speaker B:Chief Master Sanders, I think was a.
Speaker B:In.
Speaker B:In some kind of dance or some kind of a theatrical thing.
Speaker B:I did an interview with him one time.
Speaker B:People have to go back and see, but he just tested for a ninth theory, so.
Speaker B:Hey, you know, there's some.
Speaker B:Some good people coming from that background.
Speaker B:You said combat is one of your favorites.
Speaker B:Is that your favorite event to compete in?
Speaker A:Combat and sparring, sir.
Speaker B:You.
Speaker B:You like the beating people up part?
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker B:Okay, so what's your least favorite event if you had to pick one?
Speaker B:We all love all of it.
Speaker B:But forms, forms, traditional forms.
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:If you had to pick, you said you're a third degree, right?
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker B:Okay, which black belt form so far is your favorite?
Speaker C:Okay.
Speaker B:Least favorite.
Speaker A:I like the butterfly kicks in the third degree form.
Speaker A:So I'm gonna say shinjong is nice.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:I.
Speaker B:You know what?
Speaker B:I sometimes give third degree form a bad rap.
Speaker B:I really like the form.
Speaker B:I just don't like those slow psychics.
Speaker B:At the beginning.
Speaker B:Other than that, it's a great form.
Speaker A:At all.
Speaker A:So those slow sidekicks are like, terrible.
Speaker B:Yeah, that's the rough part.
Speaker B:It's a, you know, it's not, it's not an easy one after that.
Speaker B:The form is great.
Speaker B:I love the form.
Speaker B:All the advanced rich hand strike things and whatnot.
Speaker B:I just like, I like that.
Speaker B:Okay, so competition season.
Speaker B:Were you doing any TOC stuff last season?
Speaker A:I did.
Speaker A:So I'm on Team India.
Speaker B:Nice.
Speaker A:So we had our debut at Worlds this year and we did combat sparring.
Speaker A:We lost to Team Mexico.
Speaker A:I think during my match, I got 16 points towards the end, but we did get fourth and sparring, we lost to Team Philippines in the third place round.
Speaker B:Very good.
Speaker B:How exciting.
Speaker B:And it's, I mean, first year for Team India.
Speaker A:Yeah.
Speaker B:So that, that's, that's pretty awesome.
Speaker B:And, you know, not everybody gets to fight in the, in the, you know, Song Cup.
Speaker B:That's pretty awesome achievement.
Speaker B:So what are you looking at?
Speaker B:You know, new season has started.
Speaker B:Do you have individual goals?
Speaker B:Do you have, you know, team goals?
Speaker B:What kind of things are you looking for as we go into the new season?
Speaker A:I want to get some sort of title in traditional combat sparring.
Speaker A:I have titles in team sparring and team combat, but I also do want that traditional combat sparring title.
Speaker B:Gotcha.
Speaker B:You want the, the solo title?
Speaker B:Not have to share it with somebody.
Speaker A:Esther?
Speaker B:I gotcha.
Speaker B:That's a good one.
Speaker B:And what are you in the 15 to 17 division?
Speaker B:18 To 29.
Speaker B:What are.
Speaker B:Where are you?
Speaker A:I'm 16, so I'm varsity, sir.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:Varsity, Very good.
Speaker B:So that means you got a couple years till you can test for 4th degree.
Speaker B:2.
Speaker B:Are you doing legacy training?
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker B:So do you have any goals as you continue in that, you know, legacy training, helping those kind of things?
Speaker A:I really enjoy teaching and I want to get more people involved in the traditional competitions, especially with the, like, combat sparring title.
Speaker A:I want to get more people competing in that because I feel like for color belts, combat is sort of like an unknown event and not a lot of people try it out, but it's a really, really fun event to judge and it's really, really fun to compete in.
Speaker A:So I want to get that, like, more out there towards my students.
Speaker B:I love that.
Speaker B:That's a great, you know, BNM bastard out there for combat stick.
Speaker B:Get people out there competing, having a lot of fun.
Speaker B:Are you heading off to fall nationals in Pittsburgh?
Speaker A:With my schedule at school, I might be at fall nationals.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:You know, They'll.
Speaker B:That's.
Speaker B:Yeah, you know, it's not.
Speaker B:What do you.
Speaker B:Do you guys have.
Speaker B:Are you able to drive from there or is it usually a flight?
Speaker A:Sometimes we drive, sometimes we fly.
Speaker A:But it's in Pittsburgh, right?
Speaker B:Yeah, Pittsburgh this time.
Speaker B:Last one in Pittsburgh.
Speaker B:Really?
Speaker A:The last one.
Speaker B:My last one scheduled in Pittsburgh, so.
Speaker B:Don't want to miss it.
Speaker B:It's a good one.
Speaker A:I might, I might go.
Speaker B:Gotta.
Speaker B:Yeah, gotta make sure you get all your homework done, get everything taken care of.
Speaker B:I mean, make a quick trip over Friday, you know, you can get there Friday, do some competition, team stuff, Saturday competition, head home, tournament before that actually.
Speaker A:So in Fayetteville, North Carolina, there's a tournament right before Fall Nationals.
Speaker B:Is there like, is it the weekend before?
Speaker B:Is it the last one in September?
Speaker A:The like, it's the last one in September.
Speaker B:Okay, nice.
Speaker B:Good deal.
Speaker B:Okay, who's hosting that one out there?
Speaker A:It's hometown hero.
Speaker A:So I think Chief Master Michael Brown, Chief Master Kim Blue.
Speaker B:Okay, cool.
Speaker B:Excellent.
Speaker B:Well, and you'll be out there competing, I'm sure, at that one.
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker B:Taking home some golds, getting some of those points for the new season.
Speaker B:Very good.
Speaker B:Okay, so as we look at, you know, as martial artists, we're not just concerned about what happens on the mat, but obviously going, going beyond the belt.
Speaker B:So what, what kind of things have you done in your martial arts training that have helped you go beyond the belt?
Speaker B:Take it outside of the school, into the, into the world.
Speaker A:So confidence wise, I do a lot of competition events, so there's extracurriculars that we have there.
Speaker A:Deca, fba, Hosta, those are competition, like business pitch events.
Speaker A:So in those events we do have to do role plays and we have to speak on behalf of like a scenario that we get to a judge and present ourselves.
Speaker A:So confidence that I've learned from Taekwondo has really helped me with my public speaking there along with the teaching aspect.
Speaker A:So as I started teaching, I started also mentoring other kids in my school on how to do better in these events.
Speaker A:And teaching from Taekwondo has allowed me to be able to break topics into simpler explanations for people to easier, like easily understand.
Speaker B:That's awesome.
Speaker B:Wow.
Speaker B:So cool.
Speaker B:Um, are you a junior?
Speaker A:Sophomore.
Speaker A:Junior.
Speaker A:I'm a junior, sir.
Speaker B:Junior.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker B:That's what that was my guess.
Speaker B:Very cool.
Speaker B:So doing some amazing things out there, going beyond the belt with your martial arts.
Speaker B:Congratulations on being the athlete of the week and good luck on your future competitions, that individual title and maybe we'll see at nationals.
Speaker A:Yes, sir.
Speaker A:Thank you so much.
Speaker A:For having me.
Speaker B:Well, super cool Athlete of the week.
Speaker B:I was excited to get to sign the uniform at World Championships.
Speaker B:If you are interested in being an athlete of the week, you got to reach out to one of the ATA brand ambassadors and mention it and they'll give you the information and, and see if that's a good fit for you guys.
Speaker B:Instructors, if you've got a student out there, you can recommend them to one of the ATA brand ambassadors.
Speaker B:Now, a couple things real quick before we wrap up.
Speaker B:We've got a lot of great events coming up.
Speaker B:Like I said, we're into that new tournament season and we want to make sure that we are, you know, taking advantage as we get really into the fall and all these events.
Speaker B:So obviously you don't want to miss the double A event, which is spring or, excuse me, Fall Nationals in Pittsburgh.
Speaker B:Now there's the A Plus event, which is going to be September 24th and 25th in South Africa.
Speaker B:My guess is if you haven't made your plans for that, you're probably not going.
Speaker B:But you should make your plans now.
Speaker B:Next year we're going to have somebody from South Africa on soon.
Speaker B:Next year they've got an amazing thing they're doing at their big event that is an A plus event, so don't want to miss that.
Speaker B:October 19th and 21st.
Speaker B:Excuse me.
Speaker B:October 22nd through the 25th is the Pan Am Championship Expo down in Latin America.
Speaker B:And then the HU League Classic is going to be December 4th and 5th in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Speaker B:That is an A event.
Speaker B:So double A event for the Pan Am, A A plus event for the South Africa and the HUL Classic, and then obviously Double A for all Nationals.
Speaker B:Don't miss out on all nationals.
Speaker B:It's going to be awesome.
Speaker B:It's never too early to start thinking about Spring Nationals, too, but we're not going to mention that right now.
Speaker B:Now, over the next couple of weeks, a couple of things we've got going on.
Speaker B:Chesterfield, Missouri has got Master Howard.
Speaker B:September 11th and 12th is a Class A Master.
Speaker B:Barrows down in Fort Myers, Florida has a Class A on September 18th and 19th.
Speaker B:There's a Class A in Texas.
Speaker B:18, September 18th and 19th.
Speaker B:There's a Class A in Evansville, Indiana on September 19th.
Speaker B:So lots of things going on there at the beginning of September and some Class B's still going on this month.
Speaker B:I think we've got this weekend looks like Lawrence, Kansas, a Class B. California's got a Class B. Florida's got a Class B.
Speaker B:And then in September, we've Got some coming up as well.
